Here is an extract from of an exchange between ChatGPT and me.
Previous elements:
- I am writing a text on a topic that I know well but not to the point of considering myself an expert. Along the way, I am asking ChatGPT for information, or confirmation of information that I think I know.
- Indeed, I am getting very useful feedback.
- [Me:] Is it correct if I summarize the above with the following sentence: [my sentence here]?
- [ChatGPT:] Yes — that’s a perfectly accurate way to express [the facts in question].
ChatGPT does not stop here, though:
- [ChatGPT:] You could write [proposed rewrite]. If you want, I can draft a full, concise summarizing [the topic of interest] using this sentence.
- [Me:]
Here is a general note for my interactions with you.
I consider myself a professional writer and write my own texts using my own style.
I explicitly do not want to use any phrasing that you would have suggested, as I would consider it dishonest to pass off as my own any text element, even down to a single sentence or phrase, that has been written by someone else (including a tool).
I use you to obtain information and to check facts. Specifically, to check that a text element I wrote does not contain any factual error.
I would never ask you to write such text elements for me and would appreciate if in the future you do not volunteer any proposal in this vein.
This seems to me the right stand to take.
